Maia - Super Show -
Hey Everyone:
I am back from a week in Las Vegas, probably one of the most decadent places on the planet or that I have ever been. I have been going to the Martial Art Super Show for years. I have spoken at the show - 5 or 6 times and have been a vendor for the last 4 - 5 years with www.Takingittothenextlevel.com - Taking it to the Next Level consulting. This year was very slow for me, for 1) I was put in the back of the convention hall, and most people didn't really make it back there, 2) - the overall attendance didn't seem to be as big as the years previous.
Maybe it can be blamed on the economy, but I think the overall theme of the show, really didn't hit home with many of the people that I spoke to as well as it being over the 4th of July. I loved the opening ceremonies with Marcus Lutrell and Frank Silverman. Marcus Lutrell is a Navy S.E.A.L who told his story of heroism in his book "The Lone Survivor." I highly recommend this book to everyone and Mr. Frank Silverman was amazing as usual. I really like that guy.
As far as the content of the seminars, I know they were looking for people who had new ideas, in fact, when I was asked this year to give them my content, I think I blew it. I basically said, how about "The new content - is getting back to business basics." I don't think that was what they were looking for.
You see I believe at every convention their should be 3 categories of instruction.
1) Physical - classes on how to drill, or working with a specific instructor, or how to teach.
2) The Basics - how to run a school?
3) Advanced level training - marketing, management, customer service, staff training and management etc.
If you don't have this, the entire weekend is filled with fluff. If I see another guy claiming to be a social media genious, I am going to karate chop myself in the head. Seriously - what does it matter if people don't even know how to sign up the trials coming through the door, do not have a trial class call system, a sales book, a follow up program to communicate with clients - by the way, all a part of Taking it to the next level (a selfless plug).
Lets pretend that a school owner masters the social marketing aspect, a high percentage of school owners will be in the revolving door anyway. People coming in and people going out. Heck, it even happens in my school, and I know what I am doing.
So what did the people get out of the Super Show, I am sure for some gold, but the majority of the people that I talked to, they were undecided. I want to help the martial art industry grow big and small school owners alike. In fact, I am excited I signed up two guys from Scottland with a total of 3000 students. Imagine, if they can use some of my stuff, then why can't the others.
Lets talk about what you want, what you need, What can I do to help you. Just comment and lets start the conversation.
